The collection comprises primarily correspondence and college papers documenting Kohn's education at Williams College and Harvard University. Included is correspondence with classmates Jack Case, T. Merrell Shipherd and others, Kohn's college notebooks containing course lectures in a variety of subjects, notebooks containing diary entries, and materials regarding Williams Class of 1928 reunions. Also included are papers of Jack Gaylord Case, a friend of Kohn, which contain mostly Case's correspondence with Williams classmate Lucien A. Hilmer.

John S. Van E. Kohn (1906-1976) was born in New York City and graduated from Williams College in 1928. He went on to study at Harvard University, from which he received an M.A. in 1930.
